How to Repair a Swimming Pool Solar Heater

Swimming pool solar heater systems are important investments for anyone who has a pool at home. Most swimming pool solar heater systems are quite expensive, but they do last for a long time with proper care and handling.

However, solar heaters can also be vulnerable to damages and deterioration. In such cases, it is important that you know how to fix any problems with your solar heater system.

Several problems can be encountered when you use a pool solar heater. The most common problems are heater leaks, failure of the heater to turn on, failure of the heater to shut off, or problems with the solar collectors.

Other possible problems include the fluctuation of heater cycles, failure of the solar heater to achieve the desired temperature, malfunction in the combustion chamber, electronic ignition, or pilot light.

Some of the minor problems can be easily handled on your own, but some may require the expertise of a technician. If your solar heater is malfunctioning for some reason, do an inspection to try and troubleshoot the problem. In case it is a minor one, doing the inspection and the repair on your own will help save you time and money. Most of the time, malfunctions are caused by some of the components needing replacement.

In inspecting your solar water heater, make sure to check collector shading, which can affect how your solar collectors take in heat. Also, as the surroundings in your location change, new shaded areas may also be produced.

You should also check for collector soiling. Dirt accumulation on the solar collectors will affect the performance of the solar collectors. This is especially important if you leave in a dusty area. Aside from that, check for glazing in the collector. Make sure that the seals are in tip top shape. Glazing usually requires replacement, which means you just have to get them and you don’t have to find a technician. Other problems such as loose support structures, stuck pressure relief valve, and dampers, do not require technical expertise as well.

However, there are some issues that may require the help of a qualified technician. In some cases, problems arise due to plumbing issues, wiring concerns, ductwork, and insulation of piping and wiring. Make sure that ducts are sealed properly and that the insulation over pipes and wires are not damaged in any way. In case of damages, you may need to replace certain parts.

Another problem you may encounter is the heat transfer fluids you need to deal with. This means you need to replace the antifreeze solution in case you are using a liquid solar heating collector. Although this sounds simple, this requires professional knowledge. It would also help if you can verify that the water you will use is free from minerals, which may build up somewhere in the piping and may cause further problems.

Experiencing a leak in the swimming pool

If, however, you are experiencing a leak in the swimming pool’s solar panel, there is something you can do to repair the damage. The first thing you need to do is figure out the exact position of the leak. If there is a leak in the lines going to the panel, you just have cut the concerned line and install fitting. However, if the leak is in the panel itself, you need to drill a small hole into it and fill it up with epoxy. Use epoxy that is specifically made for metal.

If you think you are not capable of handling the repairs on your own, or if you don’t have the time, you can call up your solar heater provider to have your solar heater repaired. Various repair services are offered online, including those offered by famous solar heater providers.
